Let me ask you this : why work hard when you can work smart? Or better yet, not work at all? That's a bit risky though.
If you have ever been passed over by that one colleague who spends more time perfecting his ' away from desk' status than actually doing any work, then this is your moment. Because. Guess what? History, corporate world or for that matter even wildlife have a soft spot for the mischievous and lazy.
And today, we are about to celebrate them.
Now. Before you jump to conclusions I am not talking about blatant slackers here....I am taking about those who have mastered the fine art of strategic laziness. You see,, hard workers spend their days toiling while the naughty ones find creative short cuts, somehow grabbing plum assignments. They are. They are the Bill Gates approved bunch of lazy persons to do a hard job.
Bill Gates apparently said " I choose a lazy person to do a hard job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it". Why? Because, they seem to know the quickest, and easiest way to get things done. Believe me, I had sent in my CV to him. And I was told, I am not lazy enough for the post. I love Bill Gates. I am working hard on being a bit more lazy. Let's see. Now, don't compete with me.
In the animal kingdom, the elephants that go rogue, destroying crops and homes don't get punished but are packed off to a camp. There is one in Dubare, near coorg in Karnataka - India. They get pampered there, bathed and fed lush green grass by tourists by paying 400 to 500 bucks. While their more responsible, rule abiding relatives stay in the jungle doing all the hard work.
At this camp, I saw a long serpentine line of people of all heights, sizes, young and old, balancing their kids on their shoulders wading through waist deep water, tripping and falling yet trying to get across the other side to this elephant camp. And do what. See them, touch them, pamper them. Rounding of that experience with a selfie.
Recently, I saw a little naughty monk in a nearby monastery there chasing butterflies and playing with the fishes in a pond while the diligent ones were reciting the verses.
And guess, who gets all the attention and love from tourists and Bill Gates - t h e lazy ones.
So what's the lesson here friends? Well the universe clearly has a soft spot for the escapists. And while we are over here sifting through our to do lists, there is someone out there who is chasing butterflies or bathing elephants, and getting bonuses or promotion.
May be it's time to stop hustling and start thinking like a rogue elephant. Who knows... You might just get a bath and a selfie out of it
